Essay #2

What I’m working on with essay #2.  First I wanted to see what was going on with Herman Melville when he wrote Bartleby, what influenced him to write this piece.  In 1853 Melville had just completed “Moby Dick” and it had not done so well in the marketplace.  Melville’s response to this disappointment came out when he wrote Bartleby.  Melville was questioning his Christian values and the quality of his work.  Melville wrote Bartleby to express this frustration.  I believe that Herman was asking himself why doesn't society get me.  What is wrong with me and Bartleby was the result of his questions.  This is what I’m writing for essay #2.
